Sacred Threads

OVERVIEW
Sacred Threads is an exploration of two texts (a micro and a macro) that are related to themes of spirituality but not a direct reflection of the other. One text is an essay I wrote about a day with my mother (the macro) and the other text explores the concept of spirituality (the micro).
SOLUTION
The solution is a zine-styled booklet that utilizes my mother’s favorite color: purple… and a gradient that evokes a sense of the other-worldly, or a sort of feeling, rather than something tangible.
THE TYPOGRAPHY
I utilized a modern blackletter typeface called Bokor for the booklet, as blackletter is often used in Chicano and Lowrider culture, specifically on the back of cars.
THE ILLUSTRATION
The illustrations are utilized as a visual representation of the themes within the story, a perfume bottle represents the essence of my mother, an anatomical heart represents my mother’s love, and a Native-American headdress represents the dancers in the story.
THE COLOR PALETTE
The color palette is predominately purple with hints of orange, cream, and cyan. A gradient is also used to symbolize a spiritual journey and peaceful feeling.
